Communication using the internet.

There are many ways to communicate using the web these days. We use a number of them for various reasons. The following is a little introduction to a few of them. Communicating is not just writing or talking to and from a receiving party like using a phone. It can also be one way communication such as using a website. Although most sites place an e-mail address or other means to contact the owner, this is not necessarily the case. You could easily post a text file up on the web for all to read and not put any contact information in that document. This doesn't mean that the individual(s) of the document couldn't be found if someone wanted to. It just means that any kind of responce was not intended.

REMEMBER!!!
POSTING ANYTHING ON THE WEB, INCLUDING USING CHAT PROGRAMS, MAY NOT BE SECURE. BE SURE YOU DON'T PLACE CONFIDENTIAL OR SENSITIVE MATERIAL ON THE WEB UNLESS YOU ARE AWARE OF ALL POSSIBLE SECURITY RISKS. SECURITY ON THE WEB CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED BUT WILL NOT BE DISCUSSED HERE.

On a more personal note, we are not intending this information to be an advertisement for any programs that may be mentioned. This is just what we like and why. Follow the links to find out the pro's and con's.

WEBSITES FOR COMMUNICATING
One way is to create a website, with an e-mail address that is browser accessible, such as Microsoft's Hot Mail. By doing so, people can always get in touch with you if they lose your e-mail address, providing they bookmarked your website that is. And you can access it from any computer very easily.

Websites are also useful in posting information, pictures or other files that you think you may be sending in an e-mail often. By posting these things on your site you eliminate the need to continually send them using e-mail. This is especially useful reguarding large files. You won't be tying up your computer and the receiving party(s) can download them at will when it is convenient.

A LITTLE ABOUT CHAT
Chat is a favorite among many. With a "good" chat program you can see if your friends are on-line, meet others with your interests, send messages and files. There are many good chat programs out there. If you are a just starting out AOL Instant Messenger or MSN Messenger Service are ok. Drawback to these is that you and the other party must be on-line to send a message (a.k.a MSG) and last we knew, you could not save your messages in a history folder for later reference.

Our favorite chat program is ICQ (say it quick "I seek You") This is an awesome chat program with many features, including recording message history and sending a msg even if the receiving party isn't on-line. If you want to check it out just click the top right of my ICQ Pannel below were it says "What is ICQ, Download".

Other chat programs let you use voice as well as typing. And some even let you use video cameras and have a drawing board. These are known as Video Conferencing. The better ones like Microsoft's Net Meeting lets you also share someone elses computer if they allow you to.

And we can't leave out IRC which means Internet Relay Chat. This is great because so many people use it. Our favorite program for accessing IRC is called mIRC and can be very useful if you need to find someone in the know on any given subject. Since there is always thousands of people using this at any given time, you can find people to help you out on using programs or just about anything else. Be forewarned though... this program will require a slight learning curve.

For information on Newsgroups:

Besides your common methods of communication using the Internet such as E-mail, Chat and the use of Websites, there is Usenet. Usenet (Unix USErs' NETwork) is a message board for public network messages usually. Commonly used Usenet is done through Newsgroups or BBS (Bulletin Board Systems). Although not usually pretty like a website, once you learn how to access Usenet you can find just about anything relatively quickly.

For instance, you are making a greeting card and need a particular picture. By accessing a Usenet server and going to a clipart newsgroup you can download a list of pictures and discussions about clipart posted by individuals. If posted properly these posts usually include a description of some kind. If you see what you are looking for in that list you can then download the item to your computer. If you can't find the picture you want, you could write a description of what you are looking for and post it up in that group. Someone will read your request and either post the requested item in that newsgroup for you or contact you by e-mail. This is also a great way to learn the computer. Find the newsgroup that contains the subject you are looking for and post your question. Usually people will respond by posting the answer or a web address as to where to find the information you are looking for. You do not nessasarily have to post anything in these newsgroups or in a BBS to find what you are looking for. You can just read the group on a daily basis and many times the item sought will be posted sooner or later.

There is a bit of learning to be done on using newsgroups, but it really isn't hard to learn and once you have, it really will enhance your fact and file finding capabilities.
